It's not often that a new name comes along and gets you all excited. Well here is one that did just that; Jason Sundstrom. The 19 year old producer from California makes mayhem music with mighty basslines.

Starting out in drum and bass at the age of 16, he soon had two releases under his belt. Two year later at a drum and bass club a kind fellow (now current manager) introduced electro to his ears, and he fell in love with the sound.

With an original track 'Dead Calm' gaining hype on myspace, a string of remixes followed. His second original track 'Filth & Sex' is here (courtesy of Jason) for you to enjoy. It begins with a string of joyful chords which quickly gives way to a rise and drop into varying bassline mayhem. This one's pejhy!

Ways Of Seeing

Whats the deal with the black rat press recycling old exhibition pieces? last month I gave Nick Walker a bad review of his "A Sequence of Events" exhibition at the Black Rat Press gallery, one of main reasons I was critical was because the work displayed had been recycled from his last show, which took place over a year ago. It was as though Nick had just been sitting on his arse for a year and the black rat press just threw together an exhibition for him at the last minute. where was all his new work?

This brings me to the biggest problem with the Black Rat Press' latest exhibition "Ways of Seeing" . "Ways..." is a group show featuring the work of Matt Small, Swoon and Brian Adam Douglas (AKA Elbow Toe) and had the potential to be one of the best exhibitions of the year had it not been for yet more recycled pieces. The guilty party this time is Mr Matt Small, whose work was displayed just a few months ago at his solo show "Youngstarrs" However, I feel that this was more forgivable as it was a group show.

With that said, "Ways Of Seeing" still stands as one of the best exhibitions the gallery has put on this year. The three artists involved are incredibly talented. Matt Smalls' work (pictured right) has to be seen to be believed. Infact seeing his work in real life is a must. It's the only way you'll get a proper understanding of the Smalls' method as seeing images on a computer screen doesn't do his work justice. The way he makes seemingly random paint splats form a perfectly rounded and textured face is just incredible.

Ways Of Seeing also introduced me to the wonderful Brian Adam Douglas, and artist who up until now I had never seen before. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for his next solo show.

The weakest of the three artists - and probably the most famous - was Swoon. To be honest I didn't think their was anything wrong with the stuff she had displayed - I really like her work - it's just that she was over shadowed by the much better work on display from Matt and Brian.

It would have been nice to see the 3 artists collaborated on a piece. It is a shame as they all have a similar style of how they present their work, using collages of either paint, paper or wood block prints to create people and faces. A collaboration would have really worked to make the show feel a bit more complete. It does feel like you are at three seperate exhibitions at once rather than a group show as there is no interaction between the artists. A missed opportunity.

My final thought is that although not perfect this was a great show and I encourage anyone in the London area to go see it before it finishes. The talent of the three artist is almost unbeatable, the work on display is amazing and if you didn't go to Matt Smalls last show or haven't seen his work before then i promise your in for a treat.

RQM, an electronic music rapper, is set to release a new EP 'Bareley Evil' on the 3rd August. It features four tracks with remixes by Brain Matters, Bass Weazal and Filewile. My personal favorite is the BM remix but courtesy of RQM, and equally as good, we have the BW remix for you.

It's a rhythmic affair full of various beats accompanied by deep rolling bass. The big drop features part of an air-raid siren and gives way to more sirens along with the same rolling bass and an additional ravey synth chord. This one deserves some big sub-bass speakers, take care of those ears.

Lars Nørgård is a 53 year old Danish artist who paints and draws abstract and surreal pieces. The surreal work from Lars has a familiar style that fans of BLU will instantly recognise. Some of his best works, like blu, are the more simple skectes he does with pen on white paper. here are a few of my favorite pieces:

Most of Lars' shows have been in Scandinavia, with a few in america, but he is yet to exhibit in the UK. I think that with the popularity of "shringly" like work growing over here as well as gallery's such as the Concrete hermit opening their doors to European artists such as Eboy and Fons Schiedon it shouldn't be long before we see Lars work in one of the major london galleries.

Book Signing This Friday

This Friday sees the launch of the Tate Modern and Concrete Hermit project. To celebrate the three artists involved in the project Ian Stevenson, Anthony Burrill and Andrew Rae will be signing copies of their relaunched books "Lost Heroes", "Yes" and "Listen With Your Eyes" between 5:30pm and 7:00pm at the Tate Modern riverside shop.

Some brand new T-shirts designs and prints will also be available at the launch and will be sold exclusively through the Tate Modern and the Concrete Hermit shops.

Last year the Tate held their first street art exibishion displaying huge pieces on the outside of the gallery from people such as BLU and FAILE. Its great to see that they are now embracing the work of these wonderful graphic design artists who's works have been needing a bigger stage for sometime now. Bringing their work to a much needed wider audience will hopefully put a bit of cash behind the artists meaning that we might just see Ian's long awaited "Rubbish" book sometime this year as well as some new projects from both Anthony and Andrew.

The acronym U.F.O typically arises thoughts of spacecrafts, aliens and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. However, in the world of music it is an Unidentified Frequency Oscillation.

Jack Beats forthcoming EP, U.F.O, features three tracks full of oscillating bass. The first feature track, U.F.O (K-Hole Riddim), starts with a classic spacecraft speech, followed by a synthy melody, which gives way to amazing bass. The remaining two tracks, Get Down (VIP) and Labyrinth, are also worth checking out. Get Down has been modified and Labyrinth is reminicent of their remix of Patrick Wolf's Hard Times.

All in all, a pejhy must buy EP.

Just come across this little gem on Boomkat. It's a new release from the [much loved] Various Production camp, but this time from a producer other than themselves. The artist is Gold Panda whose sound, far from the dubstep/grime/funky label gven by boomkat, stands somewhere between the splattering micro-house of The Field and the twisting electro-acoustic sounds of artists such as Four Tet or The Books.

Basically it is very nice stuff. Especially loving the last track "Long Vacation" but all three are beautiful. Recommended for long journeys with headphones.

Swedish duo Hugg & Pepp, aka John & Jesper Dahlback, are consistent pejhy EP releasers, with their latest being number 15 since 2003. The Maximus EP features two tracks ('Penguini' & 'I Can't Breathe'), and is yet another example of their quality production techniques.

I find their songs, with clean beats and bass, are easily listeners, not too harsh, and as such are playable at many moments. For example I put Penguini on at an evening BBQ, fine - 2 o'clock on a dancefloor, fine - train journey, fine - sunday dinner round grandma's, probably fine.

Apparently the name, Hugg & Pepp, comes from John's father. The night before John was born he dreamed that John would be named Hugge, therefore the name Hugg. Jespers alias Pepp, is a short form for Pepponen which John's father calls him by.

i've been keeping a close eye this years "if you could" project for a while, so far its looks amazing if the list of artists involved is anything to go by. i'm glad to see Anthony Burrill is back on board this year as he's got to be one of my favorate designers.

Max Cooper

I first found out about Max Cooper when my friend, one half of GIVEMLOVEBITE, told me about the video they made for his song 'Wasp'. The video is an amazing combination of relationship and synchronisation to the sounds of the song. What you can see in the shapes are real bugs and insects (e.g. the two outer circles being live maggots).

The digital release of the Symphonica EP features 3 original tracks and 2 remixes. The sounds are a minimal/tech-house affair featuring plenty of echoes, glitches, panning and oscillations.

The feature first track, Symphonica, is the highlight and great success for such a new producer. It begins with a clean drum pattern accompanied by the odd glitch, tap, tick, pop, and continues to build with the layering of bass and more sounds. However this soon gives way to the main break, which begins with an eery silence, followed by a crescendo of tight saw bass and varying speed oscillations. The rest is best left for your ears to find out.

The Banksy Collective

Say street art to anyone and his name is sure to come up, or should that be "Their" name . It's the biggest debate scence "yeah but is it art" question back in 2003. I am of course talking about the question on everyones lips "Is Banksy a singular artist or a team of people?" I first heard rumors about the "banksy collective" a couple of years ago. It certianly explains how "Banksys" keep poping up all over the place, the latest being Mali in Africa.

Last month I took a trip down to London to ask Lazarides, the soho gallery owned by Steve Lazaride (Banksy's agent). They dismissed all rumors that Banksy was a collection of artists or that banksy was infact an art company.

The Black Rat Press, one of the few gallerys that sell genuine Banksy prints also confimed that Banksy is indeed one man.

Album artwork is such a telling media, as with that above you can kind of guess some party fun surprise awaits.

Basti Grub's 'Das Dschungel Orchester' album is a fusion of afro-beat, jazz, latino and samba with minimal house beats. It comes in two parts; the first part is african orientated with the second taking on a 1930's swing sound. Latino and balkan influences through rhythms and beats are also predominant throughout.

Full of great sounds, it works surprisingly well and is most apt for a gorgeous summers day.

Get Involved at the Concrete Hermit

I have to admit that i had low expectations for this months exibishion at the Concrete Hermit when i herd that the subject matter would be the flyer's from The Social nightclub in central London. That was until the full line-up of A-list designers and artists were announced. The show has over 30 contributors including Ian Stevenson, James Joyce, Dave The Chimp, Anthony Burrill, Jon Burgerman, Lazy Oaf, John Slade, Build, Jeremyville and Kate Moross.

Get involved has to be one of the smallest exhibitions i have ever been to, only using half the wall space in the already tiny Concrete Hermit gallery. Why they choose to use such a small space to exhibit the work of over 30 artists I'll never know.

The work itself was absolutely brilliant. It seems that The Social nightclub has given every designer complete creative control over each flyer design so what we get is over 30 completely different and diverse pieces based on the same subject matter. In fact this show holds many similarities to the brilliant "If You Could" annual project (this years is shaping up to be something truly special).

The Concrete Hermit will also be selling exclusive prints of all the work shown at the exhibition. Prints are priced at £20 each and come in editions of 10 will all profits going directly to the artists. And don't forget to pick up your free "Get Involved" postcard and sticker while your there.

Exhibition rating: 7 out of 10

Dispite the lack of space Im glad this exibishion was shown at the hermit because its crisp clean walls and light and airy space really did the artists work justice. Overall this was a decent show with a different and intresting theme, not the best exibishion the hermit has ever produced but defently worth checking out.

How to get some great art without spending a fortune

It’s no secret that the price of street art has shot up loads in the last few years (more on that soon). So what do you do if you’ve just discovered the street art scene beyond the work of Banksy and fancy nabbing some goodies at a low price? Well luckily there are loads of options available to people on a limited budget. Here are my top 5 tips on where to nab some great work at a bargain price.

Show openings
One of the best ways to get hold of something truly special is to turn up to exhibitions on opening day (if you can stand the cues). The artists will usually be hanging around somewhere so don’t be afraid to approach them and ask them to sign a program, a book, some paper, your cast, your shoes… whatever! My advice is to get them to write you a personal message, that way you won’t be tempted to sell the signature as it will mean a lot more to you then just a scribble on a page.

At some show openings you may even get the chance to purchase a rare print at a bargain price. Signed slinkachu prints (in an edition of 100) were being sold off for £5 at a group show in the black rat press eariler this year. They now sell for around £85.

Programs
Programs are becoming increasing rare at shows nowadays, the Concrete Hermit were great at publishing these little gems last year at low costs. You can still pick up signed and number programs (usually from an edition of 50) in store at the hermit for about £3. In the past they have published programs from Dan Has Potential, Ian Stevenson and (my favourite) Jon Burgerman which came with a unique drawing by Jon on each one. You can’t buy them online so make sure you pick one up next time your down there.

Self publications
Self publications are great but rather rare, count yourself lucky if manage to get hold of one. The Lazarides Shop still has a few Kelsey Brookes publications in. They are tiny paper books, each come signed and numbered from an edition of 200 and they’re only £4 each. Again you can’t get these online so make sure you ask if theirs any left next time your in Soho.

Special events
One off street art shows really do give people the opportunity to grab some great pieces for next to nothing. The most recent event I have been too would have to be the Pictures On Walls open day last Christmas, they had three or four stools set out selling all kinds of wonderful work. My favourites were the two Paul Insect prints available (on low quality paper) for £10 each and Lucy Mclauchlan model aeroplanes for a fiver, which had been sold out on her website beat13.com for ages. The highlight of the festival came from a printing press right infront of the building where artists were out printing high quality POW images on peoples clothes for free all day.

The Cans Festival is probably the biggest and best street art show I have ever been too. It was absolutely massive, half way through the day they started handing out Banksy designed posters which caused a massive scramble in the crowd.

All through the day programs were being sold at £3 each.The cans festival program is a really nice little book featuring work for the participants of the festival. I’m pretty sure you can still get these from POW, they send them out (along with a load of stickers) with every order from their site.

BE WARNED: these special one off art events can be a right pain in the arse if high profile artists happen to be displaying pieces. Me and my girlfriend cued for about 5 hours to get into last years POW Christmas open day as did a large number of Banksy fans looking to get a glimps at his new work. Rule number one for street art fans, where ever Banksy exhibits the crowd will follow. Even Ian Stevenson who had work displayed at the show had to cue for hours just to get in!

Colouring books
Not all artists these days sell their work in the forms of originals, prints and books. Some have also ventured into good old fashioned black and white colouring books; two of the best out there come from Todd James and Kozyndan.

The book from Todd James entitled “Attitude Dancer 2” is available from Shop at lazarides, each comes signed with a unique drawing on the inside sleeve and are priced at a very reasonable £15, they are in limited numbers so don’t wait around; alternatively you can purchase them from Todds website for a fiver more if you don’t fancy the trip to London.

You can get the Kozyndan colouring book entitled “Lactaid Dreams” straight from www.kozyndan.com priced at $8, all books come signed with a hand drawn picture of a bunny (their most famous image).

Von D - Coquine/ Truth (Tes la Rok Remix)

Nice rolling beats from Von D with a relentless yet uplifting chords groove. Tes la rok gives a lesson in sub on the B-side as a reminder of how to use the halftime template.

Pangaea - Memories

So much love for this tune. it had been knocking around on Pangaea's myspace player for months and receiving so many plays there, so when i saw it in the rack at Sounds of the Universe i could hardly contain my excitement. Nice soulful vocals delicately implemented in the track in the way Pangaea has proved he can do in tracks before like Router.

Landslide - Dreams & Visions

Vocals are always hard to get right in dubstep tracks. I'm interested by the vision on this soul-meets-dubstep track from Landslide, but not entirely convinced it works. The instrumental however is beautiful and Compound One gives a good remix too.

James Blake - Air & Lack Thereof/ Sparing Horses

Possibly my favourite of the bunch. James Blake displaying a master touch at mixing bouncing electronica sounds into a dubstep template. No less would really be expected of the third wheel of the mighty Mount Kimbie.

Synkro - Everyday / Tell Me

Synkro simply doing what he does best. One of my favourite producers at the moment. Strong tracks on each side with deep soulful vocals and syncopated 2-step shuffles. Tell me!

Veil - System Drills Vol. 1

Almost a year old this release, but fairly unknown. Nice analog sounds cut and mixed together into deep dark glitchy dub.

Appleblim & Ramadanman/Martyn/Pearson Sound - All Night Long Ep 2

Three of the best producers in the scene continuing to push boundaries exploring their dubstep/techno/deep house soundwaves. Epic sonic travelling to these.

Ital Tek - Massive Error Ep

A must have from another of the scenes more forward thinking producers. ital tek, continuing to effectively mix electronica and idm elements into his big beat dubstep.

STP - The Fall Remixes (T++/Peverelist)

T++ and Peverelist each contribute a remix to a release that just exudes atmospheric dubtech sounds. Peverelists track is especially large with a shuffling beat which seems to unfold into the tune from nowhere.

Led Piperz/ Boxcutter - Aerial / Otherside Dub / Otherside Rmx

Very nice electronica infused dubs here, with Boxcutter taking a whole new trip with his remix.

Hannulelauri are DJ Ender and Lauri and hail from Helsinki, Finland. They produce disco fueled house music with a pinch of krautrock. Full of 80's synths and samples, you might just have to remind yourself it's 2009. Beautiful music to close your eyes and fly away.

Hello everyone, this will be my first exhibition review for PEJHY. Here are my thoughts on Nick Walkers "A Sequence of Events" exhibition at the Black Rat Press which finished last month.

Nick Walker is a Bristol based stencil graffiti artist, in case you haven't seen Nick's work before it has the similar "black stencil on white background" look which is trademark style of the stencil graffiti scene and is insanely familiar to any fan of Blek Le Rat, Banksy or Dolk Lundgren.

So the exhibition itself, what did i think? well to be honest it was a massive disappointment. I know it was a book launch so i wasn't expecting a whole lot of new work displayed but to have nothing new was a big let down, especially because his last show at the black rat press was over a year ago.

Lets talk about last years show for a minute, at the time Nick had a huge buzz around him, lots of people had high expectations for his show and he didn't disappoint. People queued for over 24 hours to get in, there were stenciled balloons tied round lamposts down the road to promote the show, he had loads of new work on display along with some impressive scupturs; the whole show had a massive WOW factor and was a huge success.

In comparison i feel that the show last month just seemed flat. There was nothing wrong with the work on display, it just didn't do anything for me, possibly because i had seen it all before and it had lost the WOW factor on my second viewing of it.

It can't be easy for Nick to show off his skills and really impress an audience who have seen this type of work before, for starters his work is not as well known or as well executed as Banksys nor is it as original or groundbreaking as Blek le rats, therefore i was really expecting him to show off something truly amazing that would give him an original and much needed identity. unfortunately he didn't deliver at this show.

However, if your new to Nick walker then you'll love seeing his humorous multi-canvas paintings for the first time, they were a real highlight of the show and something he does extremely well. If you've seen this type of work before and it hasn't impressed you before then i don't think Nick Walker will convert you.

Where to start? Album of the year 2009? Maybe a touch too early for that & remember i have not heard Joakim's yet but it's brilliant. There is not a bad track on it & without doubt this will be the soundtrack to my summer. Released on the 16th June on Mad Decent, Diplo & Switch have produced!

The album is available to listen to in it's entirety on the Myspace page, but don't forget to buy it! I have ordered my copy from here. The cd plus t-shirt bundle was too good to miss out on! Snap them up quick though because they are very limited!

It's my favorite time of year. Up and down the country university students are showcasing their latest work in the end of year shows. Tonight I had the briefest stop by at the Nottingham Trent Fine Art show.

Although i haven't had the chance to see it in its full glory, at a glance it was looking spiffing marvelous with some really strong pieces. The whole show felt airy, not to over powered by big bossy pieces, but owned by smaller, minimal, sharp pieces.

Particularly strong pieces of work came from:

Lotti V Closs, with a marvelous kaleidoscope installation;

Simon Franklin, who does some of the best paper sculpture i have ever seen;

Neil Dixon, has made a fabulous architectural style installation;

Meg Tait, was hung up dressed as a horse - brilliant;

Bill Nguyen, does fantastic performance pieces - tonight he was hid under some carpet, i think?!

Tom Duggen, produced an incredibly clever piece of text based work along with other things.

If your in Nottingham you certainly most go - I will be as soon as I get chance next week to have a proper look- and then hopefully i'll get some visuals up for you.

Here is a short dubstep mix i compiled at the beginning of the week. Given the late hour of composition it is something of a chilled affair, but still has plenty of big rolling basslines to drift away upon. (Current favourite tracks being the Scuba remix and Cyaan Stop by Swedish producer Duke)

It has been a beautiful start to the dubstep year already with lots of new producers emerging on the scene, and the well established ones pushing their sounds in all directions. A post will follow soon with a proper retrospective of the past few months, and the prospects of the coming ones.

The bits that got me very excited were under the headings Space, Forest and Ocean. Be sure to have a look at Bambi in the Ocean scene.

This next beauty is by Julia Potts. Graduating from Kingston uni in 2007, she has since been shortlisted for numerous awards. This particular animation was part of her final exhibition.

It's bloody marvelous and if your partial to a good bit of drawing and the occasional animal hump shimmy over to her website.

John Dahlgren is an artist originating from Stockholm, Sweden. He creates beautiful installation / architectural pieces hich delight in surfaces without being superficial using everyday materials such as coffee cups and lamps.

"He deals in the patterns and curves that a stack of plastic cups makes and the spirals that form if their handles are turned. Dahlgren evokes a childhood fascination with brightly coloured objects, charting a journey of time spent with mother, from the cottom reels of the haberdashery department to the clothes pegs of the washing line and back to the towers of stickle bricks and Lego"

What I like most about Dahlgren is not only is pattern apart of his art, but also apart of his life. Apparently he has 400 striped t-shirts, and wears one everyday without fail!

A-Trak does 1000m

A-Trak's latest production is his remix of Kilometer by Sébastien Tellier. Despite trying to stop remixing and concentrate on his own productions he just couldn't refuse the offer from Mr. Tellier to remix his favourite track on the Sexuality album.

Although only one month into 2009, Busy P has already stated it as being “The remix of the year” on his blog.

The party fun factor achieved in previous productions is also instilled into this remix. I found myself wanting a large dancefloor to spin around on as soon as I heard it.

It is less punchy than previous remixes and is rather more a disco house track full of funk and soul. It features a deep yet funky plucky bass riff, repeated synth chords and vocals (as sampled from the original song), and newly added orchestral strings (performed for the first time by A-Trak himself).

This version will bring the sexy nature of the Tellier original to all club dancefloors.

Get your ears on this and have a little dance.

Two musicians from the north city Udine actively promoting their national treasure. Though their music can not be referred to italo-disco. No surprises. Eventually, everyrhing is changing, developing, music is not an exception. Nowadays only few could be referred to only house music, or only techno. You can't be limited with only one style. As for me, it's only good thing. Music become much more interesting and richy. Fare Soldi for example, is the cocktail of funk, italo-disco-house, and even is a little bit of dub. Quite modern, good-listening and dancey..

Well what can I say, Italians really do.. do it better!

The Hundred In The Hands are Jason Freidman (formerly of 'The Boggs') & Eleanore Everdell.

Debut single 'Dressed In Dresden' was given away as a free download on the bands website back in October 08. With an awesome remix on the B side from Jaques Renault (one half of 'Runaway') aptly named 'Undressed In Dresden'.

Now I could sit here & describe their sound but they do it perfectly themselves on their Myspace page.......
With carefully composed polyrhythms, jagged guitar lines, and layered, breathy vocals, 'The Hundred In The Hands' keep the raw energy of post-punk illuminating their minds and Studio One boogie-down beats churning in their guts. This is no Rock concert spectacle, no stationary stare-fest. These are soundsytem-backed, foot stomping, clap hands beats for akimbo-limbed boogie kids. Ballrooms and bar floors are built strong, it’s time to give them a pounding.

All you have to do now is listen, enjoy & show some love.
